Why Hasn’t My Data Been Removed Yet?

Updated over 8 months ago

We understand how important it is to have your data removed quickly. PrivacyHawk works hard to process your opt-out and data broker removal requests, but there are several factors that can impact the timeline. This article explains common reasons for delays and what you can do to track progress.

Why Data Removal Can Take Time

  1. Processing Timelines Vary by Company and Data Broker:

    • Many data brokers and companies have internal processes for handling removals and opt-out requests, which can take anywhere from 30 to 90 days to complete. These timelines are out of PrivacyHawk’s control.

  2. High Volumes of Requests:

    • Some companies may experience delays due to a backlog of requests, especially during high-demand periods.

  3. Verification Requirements (Opt-Out Requests only):

    • Certain companies require additional information to verify your identity before processing the removal request. This ensures that requests are legitimate but can result in longer processing times.

  4. Non-Compliance by Data Brokers:

    • While most reputable data brokers honor opt-out requests, some may be slower to comply or may require follow-ups.

How PrivacyHawk Keeps You Updated

  1. For the Data Broker Removal Tool

    1. Track Progress in the App:

      • Open the PrivacyHawk app and navigate to the Data Broker Tool section.

      • View the status of your removals, which are categorized as Processing or Protected.

    2. Processing Tab:

      • Items in the Processing tab are currently being worked on for removal.

      • Under each item, you will see a progress bar that provides an estimated time for removal.

      • If the progress bar restarts, this indicates that a new item under the same data broker has been found and is now being processed for removal.

    3. Protected Tab:

      • The Protected tab contains all items that have been successfully removed.

      • These removed items are organized by data broker for easy reference, allowing you to see which ones no longer hold your data.

    4. Monthly Scans for New Items:

      • PrivacyHawk automatically scans for new, duplicate, or resurfaced items linked to data brokers. Any new findings will be submitted for removal as part of your ongoing privacy protection.

  2. For the Reduce My Digital Footprint Tool

    1. Track Progress in the App:

      • Go to the Digital Footprint section in the PrivacyHawk app to view the status of opt-out requests.

      • Each request will display its current stage: actions needed, processing, or completed.

    2. Actions Needed Tab:

      • If a company requires additional information (e.g., identity confirmation or account details), this will be listed in the Actions Needed tab.

      • Completing these requests promptly ensures faster processing.

    3. Perform New Manual Scans:

      • Unlike the Data Broker Removal tool, the Reduce My Digital Footprint tool relies on manual scans to identify new companies that might have your data. Run these scans periodically to catch any additional vulnerabilities.

What You Can Do

  • Complete Verification Requests: If a company asks for additional information, follow their instructions and submit the necessary details.

  • Be Patient: While we aim to expedite all requests, processing times vary depending on the company’s workload and policies.

  • Contact Support: If you feel a request is taking longer than expected, or you’re unsure of the status, reach out to us at [email protected] for assistance.

Why Ongoing Monitoring Matters

Even after your data has been removed, data brokers may collect new information over time. PrivacyHawk’s tools help ensure that any new data is flagged and promptly removed to keep your digital footprint secure.
